I plan for my students to be able to follow a specific area (as recorded by Lat & Long) over time, both seasonal and thoughout diffeent academic years.
I will show my teachers how to use the tools we've learned at my elementary school.
I plan to continue geocaching as a hobby and bring the information I've learned to my high school and share with other teachers and faculty. Hopefully, they can help integrate GPS in the classroom. Thanks!!
OK. This would be cool to use when we study biomes and ecology. Students could geotag the locations of their biomes and possible microhabitats in the biomes. They could use pictures of plants an animals that live in the biome onto their maps.
I am a Tech Coordinator so I don't actually teach a class. But I do see how such a technology can be used with the proper use of other Web 2.0 technologies to engage students. This is also a fun way to introduce students to different locations of your school.
Wow! All the great ideas teachers have! Once again I see that teachers are the most creative people around.
I love the idea of mapping out points to be visited again over time.
Exposing students to new technologies is also another excellent idea. Even if it isn't the same type of technology the skills will transfer.
Bringing real plotting for math into the picture is another great idea.
I also love the idea of explaining to the students that this is the same type of technology that is used to track ankle bracelets.
I intend to share my new knowledge initially with our overachieving science and math teachers. I know that they will use the tool in creative ways to introduce students to latest technology, mapping, geography, history of mapping, motion, speed, etc. - I know that they will find a variety of ways to engage students and provide the hands on experiences that our students need to succeed in a variety of ways!!
I plan to teach my daughter, who is in college, how to geocach. I will be introducing this to 2nd graders during their geography section of social studies.
I am planning on using this knowledge on several levels:
1. I will teach the students the importance of making correct measurements and reporting them correcty in science. If the report their measurements incorrectly, no other scientist will be able to replicate their experiments. It will also affect their credibility. That is the purpose of making the wrong measurements for one of the caches in my lesson plan.
2. I will teach the students that scientists have social responsibilities too. By showing the students that there are environmental rules to be followed while geocaching, I will promote environmental preservation and safety skills.
3. I will use the geocaching activity to promote the use of the International System of Units used by scientists around the world to make and report their measurements. That is the purpose of having the students take the measurements in meters. I can relate this to the loss of one of our Mars probes due to the fact that one of the engineers designed the probe using the English measurement system and the people that built the probe thought the measurements were done using the International System of Units, therefore causing the probe to malfunction and eventually be destroyed.
I will definitely try to implement all that I have learned in my classroom. I will share the information with other teachers and seek out a general education teacher whose students could work with my class. I think that it would be a wonderful learning opportunity for all.
Honestly, I learned some pretty cool stuff in this class. I enjoyed learning about geotagging. I will show my daughter the google littrips!
I plan for my students to use it to track a travel bug and tag locations they learn about this year while reading.
